PoE cameras worth wiring for

Every camera here has hung on my house for at least a month, recording to a Synology with no cloud subscription.

BEST INDOORS

Amcrest 1080p pan-tilt

Cheap, quiet, and good enough for a hallway. Don't point it at anything you'd need in court.

How I test

Every camera goes on the same rail on the same wall, wired to the same PoE switch, recording continuously to a Synology DS923+. Minimum one month, through at least one rain event and one week of sub-freezing nights.

I count false alerts by hand for seven days. I check whether a face is identifiable, not just whether motion triggered. And I note what the week cost me in storage, because that’s the number nobody puts on the box.

Common questions

Do I need a NAS, or will a microSD card do? A card is fine for one indoor camera. The moment you have two 4K streams outside, you want a NAS — cards wear out, and you’ll lose the week you actually needed.

Is PoE really worth the wiring day? Yes. One cable for power and data, no batteries to charge, no Wi-Fi dropouts at the far corner of the house.

What I'd buy this week, and what I'd skip

One short email: new video, price drops worth acting on, and the firmware update that broke something.
